Mom, the guys and I really enjoyed the supper. We saved two slices of pie for you and Pop. I hope that you got elected, Pop. Tell me all about it in the morning. Important swim meet tomorrow evening, so I’m heading for dreamland.
Tip
I didn’t lock the front door. In the country, one doesn’t often. I pulled the door of my room shut, slipped between my sheets, and remembered the exciting events of the evening. My last conscious thoughts were of my friends’ cocks and asses as I drifted into a homoerotic dream state.
I never heard Pop and Mom arrive home. The roosters began crowing with lusty vim, the sun painted the sky with rosy streaks, and morning bolted in gloriously. I jumped from my bed invigorated to experience a new day. The daffodils were blooming with morning abundance, and new tulips were preparing to blow.
I pulled on khaki shorts and a fresh T-shirt and headed for the delicious aroma wafting from the kitchen. Mom was using the big griddle, and the circles of buckwheat pancakes were browning nicely. A gigantic slab of hot ham was already sitting on the table. Looking especially pleased with himself, Pop was sipping coffee and glancing at the sports section. The newspaper carried a photograph of me diving into the pool. The writer of the article was speculating about our chances of beating the Copperheads. No one expressed any doubt that we would trounce the Dippers that night.
“Congratulations,” I said.
Pop’s head jerked up from his paper. “How did you know I won?”
“From your expression.” Pop’s face clouded, so I added, “You look like a winner.”
That brightened him up. Mom gave me a smile as she set a stack of pancakes in front of me. I cut a thick wedge of butter and placed it on top. Then I poured honey over it and took a forkful. Mom poured me a tall glass of milk and I helped myself to some ham.
“How many ballots?” I asked around the food in my mouth.
Pop’s eyes were alight with braggadocio. “I won on the first.”
“Way to go, Pop.” I glanced at the clock and ate faster. “We’re at the Muskrat Creek Aquatic Center tonight. Seven o’clock.”
“I’ll be there,” Mom said.
“I’ll try,” Pop said. “You understand I can’t promise.”
“Yeah, I know.” I never believed that the farm equipment business was that heavy in the evenings. I mean, if somebody’s going to shell out for a tractor, isn’t the buyer going to try it out in the daylight? The truth was that seeing me in a competition swimsuit shriveled Pop’s nuts. All that young masculine flesh in red swimmer’s briefs awakened his most homophobic impulses, and that night promised even worse because we were racing against the Klamath Falls Dippers, who wore white swim bikinis cut narrow in the rear. By the conclusion of every race, the Dippers looked like they were wearing invisible thongs.
We Muskrats changed in the familiar locker room at the Muskrat Creek Aquatic Center, our home turf.
